Dua Lipa was recently in Austin two weekends in a row for her sets at ACL. She kept showing up in friends' IG stories. It was typical this ACL for acts to post content on their social media showing their relatability and connection to local culture (like Dom Dolla in a custom Longhorn's jersey 🙄). Dua Lipa's account posted videos of the popstar dancing at The Broken Spoke and dangling from the rafters of the Donn's Depot bathroom.

The video of Dua Lipa being thrown around by an old guy in a cowboy hat at Broken Spoke made me cringe because it reminded me of many dances I've had Thursday through Saturday nights at The White Horse: when tourists and UT kids show up and, after a few drinks, dance with the regulars. These folks often don't know the basic steps (two slows and two quicks in closed position and simple jitterbug - a rock-step and two quicks - in open position) and their form and framing are usually not good:

  • Don't fully extend your arms on the rock-steps; you want to maintain an elasticity with your partner.
This also keeps you from flying into whoever is behind you.

  • When in closed position, you want to be facing but slightly to the left of your partner so your feet don't collide on every step.

  • You need to frame up properly in closed position so that you can send and receive signals clearly and quickly.

  • Please dance on the beat.

So the videos confirmed Dua Lipa is a normie and not a two-stepping, live country music obsessive like me. Which means, like you reader, she can benefit immensely from just one hour of country dance instruction!

I DJed a wedding at Lone Oak Barn (RIP) within the past two years where the bride and groom hired a dance instructor to, during cocktail hour, teach their guests a simple two-step as well as the line dance to Brooks & Dunn's "Boot Scootin' Boogie." You should do this too! With just one hour of instruction, you can assure that there will be people on your dancefloor dancing to the country jams the DJ plays. Your guests are going to have more fun and your dancefloor photos will look amazing!

In one hour a dance instructor can show your guests closed position, open position, and lead and follow turns as well as teaching a simple line dance. I have listed three country dance instructors on my recommendations page and I encourage you to reach out to them.
